he Grace of Silence: A Memoir#9 -The Grace of Silence: A Memoir

by Michele Norris

Pub. Date: September 2010
Publisher: Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group
ISBN-13: 9780307379467
ISBN: 0307379469
Available only in the U.S.

In the wake of talk of a “postracial” America upon Barack Obama’s ascension as president of the United States, Michele Norris, cohost of National Public Radio’s flagship program All Things Considered, set out to write, through original reporting, a book about “the hidden conversation” on race that is unfolding nationwide. She would, she thought, base her book on the frank disclosures of others on the subject, but she was soon disabused of her presumption when forced to confront the fact that “the conversation” in her own family had not been forthright.

Norris unearthed painful family secrets that compelled her to question her own self-understanding: from her father’s shooting by a Birmingham police officer weeks after his discharge from the navy at the conclusion of World War II to her maternal grandmother’s peddling pancake mix as an itinerant Aunt Jemima to white farm women in the Midwest. In what became a profoundly personal and bracing journey into her family’s past, Norris traveled from her childhood home in Minneapolis to her ancestral roots in the Deep South to explore the reasons for the “things left unsaid” by her father and mother when she was growing up, the better to come to terms with her own identity. Along the way she discovered how her character was forged by both revelation and silence.

Extraordinary for Norris’s candor in examining her own racial legacy and what it means to be an American, The Grace of Silence is also informed by rigorous research in its evocation of time and place, scores of interviews with ordinary folk, and wise observations about evolving attitudes, at once encouraging and disturbing, toward race in America today. For its particularity and universality, it is powerfully moving, a tour de force.

Which eBook reader is better, Amazon's Kindle or Barnes & Noble's Nook?

This is a question I'm frequently asked and my reply is usually, "It depends."

nookAs far as a pure eBook reading device the Kindle is best suited for the job.  However, if I had to chose only one device I would pick the Nook.

The Nook can be read in bed with the lights out. The Nook also has a solid web browser which gives it far more functionality than Amazon's Kindle.  While the Kindle is useless with an external light source, it is great for reading on the beach.

The Nook is pretty heavy.  Too heavy to read, for long spans without resting the reader on something.  With my protective case whole thing weights over a pound, which does not sound like much, but it can get heavy in a hurry -- even for a strong guy like myself.

the KindleBy contrast the Kindle is relatively svelte at just over 8 ounces (much less than a pound, even with the a protective case). The Kindle is also a lot slimmer.  The size and weight make the Kindle much easier to hold and read books for long stretches.

Both download books in a heart beat and allow you to keep your place it you chose to pick up the same book on your smart phone, using the free apps both vendors provide.  Of the two eBook reader, the Kindle is less expensive and has more available titles.

So your choice really depends on how you plan on using the device.  If you are like me you can get both and save yourself the hassle of deciding.

I've been fascinated by the eBook phenomenon for sometime now.  Over a decade ago I wrote a research paper on the most popular eBook reading devices.  At the time I thought eBook would pick up steam much more quickly.  I would never have guessed it would take more than a so long.
