Zane,
Eileen M. Johnson &
V. Anthony Rivers
Hardcover: 288 pages
Publisher: Atria; 3 Books in 1 edition (November 14, 2006)
Language: English
ISBN: 0743498623
Truer words have never been
spoken. This heart-wrenching collection of novellas brings that statement to
life in three unique ways, penned by three of the generation's most prolific
authors.
In
Eileen M. Johnson's "How the
Other Half Lives," Jamellah and Fernecia have been friends since forever.
Having escaped the poverty of their youth together, they both had made their
mark in society. However, men problems threaten to make them literally fall
apart. Fernecia is married to a man who was raised to think he is better
than everyone -- even his own wife. Jamellah has always used men to get
ahead but eventually everything catches up to her. The two friends must
ultimately count on each other in a world of havoc and distrust.
In
V. Anthony Rivers' "Love Is 2
Blame," Malcolm is devastated after a two-year relationship with Shaylisa
ends. He finds it difficult to function because he cannot comprehend why she
would want to end such a perfect situation. He was everything she had asked
for; he treated her with respect and showered her with love. Yet love was
not enough. Trying to move on to someone new will not be as easy as it used
to be, but will the lovely Zahara show Malcolm what true love is all about?
In
Zane's "Staring Evil in the Face," Robier has everything a man could
ever wish for: a stable and rewarding career, two beautiful children, an
elegant home, and the woman of his dreams. Having loved Tiphanie since
college, he is determined to keep his marital vows until . . . Tiphanie is
involved in a horrible car accident that changes the entire course of their
lives.
From nervous breakdowns to drug addiction,
Love Is Never Painless explores the deeper side of love; the side rarely
explored in romance novels. Zane, Johnson, and Rivers have penned a powerful
collection of novellas that will not only have readers talking but also
examining their own relationships with a new perspective. |

Format: Hardcover, 205pp

Read an AALBC.com Interview with
Steffans
Glass vases filled with marbles crashed all around us
as he began tossing linens from the bed. As the marbles scattered, we
laughed in unison ... I remember the exact moment that I first laid on my
back for him ... My legs were wrapped around his waist and just before his
body was to merge with mine, I noticed his upper right chest. On it was a
tattoo with the words "Pain is Love."
Confessions of a Video Vixen is the widely anticipated
memoir of Karrine Steffans, the once sought-after sexy siren who appeared in
the music videos of multiplatinum hip-hop artists such as Jay-Z, R. Kelly,
and LL Cool J. A top-paid video dancer, Karrine transitioned to film when
acclaimed director F. Gary Gray picked her to costar in his film A Man
Apart, starring Vin Diesel. But the movie and music video sets, swanky Miami
and New York restaurants, and trysts with the celebrities featured in the
pages of People and In Touch magazines only skims the surface of Karrine's
life.
This memoir -- part tell-all, part cautionary tale --
shows how Karrinne came to be the confidante of so many, why she kept their
secrets, and how she found herself in Hollywood after a life marked by
physical abuse, rape, and drugs -- all before she was twenty-six. By sharing
her emotionally charged story, she hopes to shed light on an otherwise
romanticized industry.

“Young men today have been bombarded with images of
wealth and success that tell them that buying the hottest car or the most
bling-blingin’ jewelry is what they should be motivated by. There is an
overwhelming sales pitch targeted at these young men that subliminally
suggests that material goods are what makes them real men. I want young men
to have knowledge of the things that bring them true empowerment: education,
a strong sense of purpose, compassion, confidence, and humility, to name a
few.
It is no accident that I graduated from Brown University magna cum laude and
received graduate degrees with honors from Harvard Law School and the
Kennedy School of Government. My family taught me that doing my best,
educating myself, and being in service to others were not optional and that
having values and being truthful were not negotiable.
I am living proof that these principles work. Through the letters in this
book, I wish to pass on to other young men my grandfathers’ legacies of
education, hard work, determination, and success.” |

Zane is back with Gettin' Buck Wild: Sex Chronicles II,
more stories for the legion of readers that made The Sex Chronicles a
bestseller.
Zane's erotic short stories have captivated the minds of both sexes and all
races. The Sex Chronicles: Shattering the Myth did exactly what its title
implies -- exploded the myth that men are more sexual in nature than women,
and that African-American women in particular are inhibited compared to
their female counterparts of other cultures.
Her audience is growing by leaps and bounds, nurtured by her Internet site
and her previous bestselling titles, including The Heat Seekers, her debut
in hardcover. Zane knows exactly what her readers want, and in Gettin' Buck
Wild she gives them some of her most provocative prose to date. Her
characters and settings run the gamut from committed, monogamous couples
looking to experiment, to the wild single sisters who belong to a very
unconventional sorority. Zane tells the story of a high-paid multi-tasking
career woman who gets her groove back in "When Opposites Attract," a couple
who try something new in "The Subway -- A Quickie," and a new way of
celebrating Christmas in "The Santa Claus." She spices up real-life
scenarios with over-the-top sexual fantasy and ultimately gives her readers
the best time they've ever had between the pages of a book. |

Kola Boof
Hardcover: 441 pages
Publisher: Door of Kush (February 1, 2006)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0971201986
Kola Boof's long awaited autobiography "Diary of a Lost
Girl" is nothing less than magnificent. Many will be spellbound by more than
90 pages detailing her terrifying experience as Osama Bin Laden's former
mistress, but the Sudanese-born Novelist/Poet writes even more profoundly
about the hardships of being vaginally circumcised, about witnessing her
birth parents killed in her presence as a small child, about slavery and
Arabism in Sudan, about being adopted and raised in the U.S. by African
Americans, about her quest for true love, and in one particularly daring
chapter, about her hopes for the future of her sons.
Add to that years of psychiatric treatment, a struggle with manic anger
and quite a few daring romances other than Bin Laden and you've got the
perfect ingredients for a feature film.
Readers will find themselves fascinated as innocent young Naima Bint
Harith tragically becomes the vitriolic complicated temptress Kola. A doomed
movie starlet, feminist activist and "kept woman"...who ultimately emerges
as the loving mother, outspoken novelist/poet and professional cook that we
know today as Kola Boof.
Throughout the book, Kola speaks in a voice so utterly naked, truthful
and unpretentious that it's impossible not to fall in love with her.

Publisher: Stewart, Tabori & Chang, Inc.
Presents Maya Angelou's poem illustrated by
paintings and drawings of Jean-Michel Basquiat. Features biographies of both
the author and artist.
Shadows on the wall
Noises down the hall
Life doesn't frighten me at all
Maya Angelou's brave, defiant poem celebrates the courage
within each of us, young and old. From the scary thought of panthers in the
park to the unsettling scene of a new classroom, fearsome images are
summoned and dispelled by the power of faith in ourselves.
Angelou's strong words are matched by the daring vision of artist
Jean-Michel Basquiat, whose childlike style reveals the powerful emotions
and fanciful imaginings of childhood. Together, Angelou's words and
Basquiat's paintings create a place where every child, indeed every person,
may experience his or her own fearlessness.
In this brilliant introduction to poetry and contemporary art, brief
biographies of Angelou and Basquiat accompany the text and artwork, focusing
on the strengths they took from their lives and brought to their work. A
selected bibliography of Angelou's books and a selected museum listing of
Basquiat's works open the door to further inspiration through the fine arts. |

Pub. Date: September 2003
Publisher: Simon & Schuster Adult Publishing Group
Zane's legion of fans can't get enough of her way of telling a juicy, sexy
story. Now, the New York Times bestselling queen of erotica brings us a tale
of a woman with a split personality -- one highly sexed and one sexually
repressed.
Jonquinette Pierce has always been nervous when it comes to men. She took a
job dealing with mostly women so she could avoid men. She goes to work and
comes straight home during the week, but on the weekends her other self,
Jude, takes over and goes on intense sexual escapades.
Jonquinette recognizes that her alter ego is a problem and seeks to resolve
it with the help of Dr. Marcella Spencer, the psychiatrist Zane originated
in her bestselling novel Addicted. Jude's response is to get angry and go on
a sexual rampage. In the meantime, Jonquinette becomes interested in her new
neighbor, Mason, after having a conversation with him at a mutual friend's
wedding. Jude has no intention of letting Jonquinette fall in love and find
happiness at her expense. Jude is having way too much fun using the body she
shares with Jonquinette. This "two faces of Eve" scenario is a fun fantasy
for women who have imagined their own alter ego behaving badly in a sexual
way. But for the leading lady of Nervous, this is a nightmare. Based on a
short story of the same title from her bestselling collection, The Sex
Chronicles, Nervous is classic Zane with an edge. So, relax, sit back.

First Sentence:
What happened in Los Angeles in April of 1992 was neither a race riot nor a
class rebellion.
The scholar, theologian, and activist who has been acclaimed as one of
the most eloquent voices in our ongoing racial debate now bridges the gulf
between black and white America in a work of enormous resonance and moral
authority. West takes on the questions of politics, economics, ethics, and
spirituality and addresses the crisis in black leadership.
First published in 1993 on the one-year anniversary of the L.A. riots,
Race Matters has since become an American classic. Beacon Press is proud to
present this hardcover edition with a new introduction by Cornel West. The
issues that it addresses are as controversial and urgent as before, and
West's insights remain fresh, exciting, and timely. Now more than ever, Race
Matters is a book for all Americans—one that will help us build a genuine
multiracial democracy. |

Can you say WILD? Can you say FREAKY DEAKY?
Can you say in your best Shananae imitation, "Oh my goodness! No she didn't
even go there!" If you can say all of that, then you can probably handle
reading this book. However, the only thing you will be able to say after you
finish it is "Shame on it all!" Thus, the title.
Harmony, Bryce and Lucinda aka Lucky
Whitfield are sisters in the truest sense of the word. They argue and they
get on each other's nerves but when it comes down to the wire, they are
extremely protective of one another. One brotha in particular has to find
out the hard way that if you mess with one of the Whitfield sisters, you
mess with the whole family.
Shame On It All is a dramady about their
adventures, their friendships, their love lives and their outlooks on
situations facing most African-American women in today's society.
Harmony, the oldest, is the conservative
type. A successful business owner who often puts in long hours to make extra
money to help support her younger sisters. She is often torn between doing
what's right and doing what feels good but there is one thing she doesn't
sway her opinion on and that's the physical and emotional welfare of Bryce
and Lucky.
Bryce, the middle sister, is fascinated with
two things; hair weaves and hellified sex in that order. She is by far the
wildest of the Whitfield crew. While she often talks trash about Harmony to
her face, she simply will not tolerate it from anyone else. Sometimes rowdy
and always uninhibited, Bryce takes no prisoners when it comes to getting
what she wants out of life.
Lucky, the baby of the bunch, is a thriving
medical school student and as Afrocentric as they come. She brings a degree
of balance to the often volatile conversations between her two older
siblings but sometimes she lacks good judgment when it comes to
relationships with men.
Fatima, Harmony's best friend, wants out of a
troubled marriage to a wealthy businessman. She is willing to do just about
anything to get him out of her life and with the aid of a few trusted
friends, she does just that in the most unique way.
Colette, Bryce's best friend, puts the H in
hoochie. She spends the majority of her time macking men. That is, until she
meets her match in the form of a male stripper sporting a 2 x 4 between his
legs.
Jam-packed with unpredictable, unbelievable
and just downright crazy situations with a few surprising twists thrown in
for good measure, Shame On It All is as wild as they come.
The five sections of Shame On It All are
separated by four commercials, adding to the uniqueness the book. All of the
people featured in the commercials end up as minor characters in the book. |

Alice Walker
Hardcover: 128 pages
Publisher: New Press (November 30,
2006)
Language: English
ISBN: 1595581375
Book Description: A beautifully packaged book of spiritual
ruminations with a progressive political edge, from the incomparable
Pulitzer Prize-winner—a woman who has devoted her life to befriending the
earth.
From the Introduction: "In fact, the happiness that imbues this kind of
(impersonal) friendship, whether for an individual or a country, or an act,
is like an inner light, a compass we might steer by as we set out across the
lengthening darkness. It comes from the simple belief that what one is
feeling and doing is right. That it is right to protect rather than
terrorize others; right to feed people rather than withhold food (and
medicine); right to want the freedom and joyful existence of all human kind.
Right to want this freedom and joy for all creatures that exist already, or
that might come into existence. Existence, we are now learning, is not
finished! It is a happiness that comes from honoring the peace or the
possibility of peace that lives within one's own heart. A deep knowing that
we are the earth—our separation. |

Format: Paperback, 71pp
Pub. Date: January 1989 (originally published in 1934)
Publisher: Helga Rogers
Edition Description: REVISED
Written in the 1940's and published in 1957.
BLACK FACT:
White American slave-holders used to induce white women to marry Negro
slaves in order to hold the women slaves for life.
PROOF:
In Sept. 1664, Maryland passed a law that any white woman who married a
'Negro' should serve the master of such slave "for life." Slave-holders took
advantage of this law to induce the white women, some of whom were recent
arrivals, to marry the "Negroes." MacCormac says, "Instead of preventing
such marriages this law enabled avaricious and unprincipled masters to
convert many of their (white) servants into slaves." In 1681, the
Legislature was forced to issue the following law: "Divers freeborn English
or white women sometimes by the instigation, procurement, and connivance of
their master.... and always to the satisfaction of their lascivious and
lustful desires....do intermarry with 'Negroes' and other slaves, be it
enacted that if any master....having any freeborn English or white woman
servant in their possession or property, shall by any instigation,
procurement, knowledge, permission or contrivance," cause her to marry a
slave she should be free at once and the master should pay a fine of "10,000
lbs. of tobacco." (Archives of Maryland, Vol. I, pp. 433-34; and Vol. III,
pp. 203-04, also Johns Hopkins University Studies in Hist. & Pol. Science,
No. 3 & 4.) What is true of Maryland was true of other states.

Pub. Date: August 2002

Read an AALBC.com Book Review
Set in 1982, this marvelously entertaining sequel to
Johnson's well-received first novel, Standing at the Scratch Line, continues
the mythic saga of King Tremain, a knife- and gun-wielding Prohibition-era
Robin Hood. Leaving a bloody trail of corpses from the bayous of Louisiana
to New York and San Francisco, King's fight for survival against
overwhelming odds offers a deeply affecting metaphor for black America's
struggle for dignity and rights in the 20th century. The sequel picks up
with San Francisco civil servant Jackson Tremain being summoned to the
deathbed of his estranged grandfather, former mob-enforcer King, who has
spent the past 28 years exiled deep in Mexico after being framed for the
murder of white cops in San Francisco. Jackson flies to Mexico just in time
to learn that he is the heir to a $50 million fortune. Returning to the Bay
Area, Jackson learns that contracts are already out on his life from enemies
determined to claim the fortune, and soon both he and his girlfriend are
imperiled by King's old nemesis, bayou crime patriarch Pug DuMont, who's in
cahoots with Bay Area mafiosi. Secret treasure, gang wars, voodoo,
illegitimate heirs, damsels in distress in the hands of a lesser writer,
this would be cheap pulp fiction, but the gifted Johnson gives sweep and
emotional resonance to the action-packed hijinks. —Publishers Weekly |

Joel Augustus Rogers
ISBN: 0960229442
Format: Hardcover, 132pp
Pub. Date: January 1989
Publisher: Helga Rogers
This short book follows a prolonged conversation on skin
color prejudice between a white senator from the South and his widely
traveled, well-read Black porter. Rogers himself worked as a Chicago porter
and was largely self-educated. Toward the end of the book, Dixon, the
porter, is asked if Christianity has not been a solace to mistreated Black
people. Dixon echoes the feelings of his creator:
To enslave a man, then dope him to make him content! Do you call
THAT a solace? . . . The honest fact is that the greatest hindrance to
the progress of the Negro is that same dope that was shot into him
during slavery. . . . The slogan of the Negro devotee is: Take the world
but give me Jesus, and the white man strikes an eager bargain with him.
. . . Another fact — there are far too many Negro preachers. Religion is
the most fruitful medium for exploiting this already exploited group. As
I said, the majority of the sharpers, who among the whites would go into
other fields, go, in this case, to the ministry.

Noire
ISBN: 0345477219 Pub. Date: January 2005 Format: Paperback, 301pp Publisher: Random House Publishing Group
You all can't be as
shocked as I am that I read G-Spot: An Urban Erotic Tale by Noire. Well I
did and I have to say that I loved it! The novel read like a novel that Gary
Hardwick and Zane would write together. The novel is
about a young girl, Juicy, who gets caught up in The Life as the woman of
THE gangsta in Harlem named G. G has Juicy on LOCK DOWN on all facets of her
life. But, as you all know, alll good things MUST come to an end for G
because Juicy starts earning freedom, physically, emotionally, and sexually.
Pretty soon she's not able to stop herself, even though she's well aware of
the price she could pay, because even her poon poon belongs to G. Juicy
busted loose and all sorts of thangs goes to hell in an hand basket.
I was more than impressed with G-Spot because it is one of the first
"hip hop" novels that is written well, makes a semblance of sense, and walks
down the path that Iceberg Slim
and Donald Goines carved
out. I've been having Iceberg Slim on my mind lately because I'm still
reading Iceberg Slim: The Life as Art, which is deep--truly a fine work of
literary criticism on Slim's literary work. While G-Spot doesn't have the
same social significance that is in Iceberg Slim's works, its a fine
starting point to where "hip hop" fictional literature could go. If you are
one of the few who haven't heard of G-Spot, I recommend that you check it
out." —Thumper, AALBC.com
